The Hario Switch is a V60 02 with a valve at the bottom. It was designed in 2020 as a hybrid brewer that lets you choose, mid-brew if you want, between pure percolation (valve open, standard V60 behaviour) and immersion (valve closed, the bed steeps in water). This simple addition transforms the V60 into one of the most versatile brewers on the market.

The trick is that you can combine both modes in the same recipe. A classic Switch approach, popularised by James Hoffmann, is to start with the valve closed, pour the full dose of water in one go, wait for immersion to do its thing, then flip the valve open for drawdown. The cup lands somewhere between a Clever Dripper and a V60 — sweetness and body from the immersion phase, clarity from the percolation finish.

A starting recipe: 20 g of coffee to 300 g of water (1:15), medium-fine grind, water at 94 °C, valve closed for the first 2:00 (full immersion), then open and let drawdown finish in 1:00 to 1:30. Uses standard V60 02 paper filters. It is the V60 to buy if you own only one pour-over, because it covers ground-zero technique, immersion brewers who want filtered clarity, and everything in between.

Not a timer. Your barista. It guides every pour live, learns from each cup and tells you what to change to nail the next one — with a tasting journal, bean and grinder tracking.
