Compact flat bed with precise flow

The Fellow Stagg X, launched in 2016 by Fellow Products, took the flat-bottom idea established by the Kalita Wave and rebuilt it around modern pour-over expectations. It is a single-walled stainless steel dripper with a tapered flat bed, a ratio guide engraved on the inside wall, and a drainage pattern that sits between a Wave and a V60 in flow rate.

Fellow's philosophy shows in the geometry. The tapered sides channel water through the centre of the bed rather than around the paper edges, the flat bottom keeps extraction even, and the single wall means the dripper preheats quickly with a filter rinse. Fellow sells branded papers, but the X takes generic #4 wedge filters in a pinch — a practical detail that separates it from brewers with proprietary paper.

A starting recipe for the X: 22 g of coffee, 350 g of water (1:16), medium grind, water at 93–95 °C, three to four pours in 3:00 to 4:00. The cup profile lands closer to a Wave than a V60 — sweet, balanced, even — but with cleaner high notes than most flat-bottom brewers produce. For anyone who wants pour-over clarity without fussing over pour rate, it is a strong first dripper.
