Orea is a British specialty brewer brand founded by former barista James Gray in 2019. The V3, launched in 2021, was their third iteration of a flat-bottom dripper designed from scratch for specialty coffee — no paper-maker compromises, no Japanese heritage geometry, just a modern take on what a flat bed should be.
The V3's signature is unusual: it pairs a very flat bed (flatter than a Kalita Wave) with a generously open drainage pattern, which sounds contradictory until you brew with it. The open bottom lets water drain through the filter freely, so the cup you taste depends almost entirely on grind and pour technique rather than the dripper itself. In skilled hands this means enormous range — you can pull light, tea-like clarity or rich, syrupy body out of the same device.
A baseline recipe: 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water (1:16), medium grind, water at 94 °C, four pours in 2:30 to 3:00. The V3 uses standard 185 Wave filters, which makes it practical to live with. It is the dripper specialty competitors reach for when they want a flat bed but do not want to be limited by one.
