Acaia Lunar vs Acaia Pearl

Same maker, same 2 kg, same 0.1 g. What separates them is where they sit: the Lunar on an espresso machine's drip tray, the Pearl under a dripper.

Maker's figures for the current models: Acaia Lunar 2021 and Acaia Pearl 2021.

The short answer

Get the Lunar if you pull espresso. It is 10.5 cm across and 15 mm tall, made of anodised aluminium and water-resistant, and several of its modes are built around a shot: timers that start with the first drops and tare the cup for you.

Get the Pearl if you mostly brew filter coffee. Its 16 cm platform takes a dripper on a wide server with the display still in view, and it is the cheaper of the two. It is not water-resistant.

Acaia puts it the same way: either scale can do either job, but each was designed for a different one.

Precision

Both read to 0.1 g. The Lunar also has a 0.01 g high-resolution setting, whose last digit Acaia calls an estimate. The Pearl reads 0.5 g above 1 kg in its default setting and 0.1 g throughout in High.

Flow on the display

The 2021 versions of both show a flow-rate bar tuned to their job: from 0.1 to 3.4 g/s on the Lunar, for espresso, and from 0.5 to 9.5 g/s on the Pearl, for pour-over. The originals have none.

With Gota

They work the same way. Gota reads the weight from either one, shows your pour rate in grams per second against the recipe's target, cues you at each target weight and closes the pour once it settles. Pick your model in Settings → Scale. More on each: Acaia Lunar and Acaia Pearl.
