The April Brewer is a flat-bottom dripper designed by Patrik Rolf, founder of April Coffee in Copenhagen and two-time World Brewers Cup finalist. Released in 2021, it targets the aesthetic and brewing style popular in Nordic specialty coffee: high clarity, prominent acidity, light to medium roasts, and an unambiguous single-origin character.

How the April Brewer brews

The dripper uses a flat bottom with four large drainage slots rather than the three small holes of a Kalita. Larger openings mean flow is not the limiting factor — grind size and pour technique determine drawdown speed instead. A ridged interior wall keeps the filter from sealing. The combination of flat bottom, open drainage, and ridged wall produces behaviour closer to an Orea than to a Kalita: flat-bed forgiveness with fast pour-over drawdown.

April ships proprietary paper filters sized to the dripper. Third-party flat-bottom filters can be adapted but native filters fit best.

What April Brewer recipes in this collection share

There is only one dripper in the April family, so recipes focus on technique variation rather than size. The signature style is what Patrik Rolf calls "aggressive" pouring: strong, circular pours at higher-than-usual flow rates to actively agitate the bed. This contrasts with the gentle pour style typical of Kalita and Chemex recipes. Typical parameter ranges:

Choose the April Brewer when you want a flat-bottom brewer with the drawdown speed and technique-responsiveness of a pour-over, when you favour Nordic-style light-roast single origins, or when you want to emulate the recipes Patrik Rolf and April Coffee publish for their own beans.
