Clever and Switch

Level Intro Read 4min

Both brewers solve the same problem: what if you could steep like a French press, but drain through a paper filter? The Clever Coffee Dripper has a gravity-triggered valve in the bottom — it stays closed until you place the brewer on a cup, and the cup pushes the valve open. The Hario Switch is a V60 with a manual valve. Same idea, different release mechanism.

What this hybrid is good at

You get immersion's big advantage: full control over contact time. The water and grounds equilibrate without the bed having to manage flow. Then, when you're ready, you release and a paper filter pulls out the body and fines. Result: a clean cup with full extraction, almost impossible to mess up.

This is the "no skill required" brewer in the best sense. If you've struggled with V60 channeling or French press silt, this side-steps both.

How to brew it

The basic recipe is symmetric:

  1. Add coffee, add all the water at brew temperature (90–94°C).
  2. Stir or swirl once to wet everything.
  3. Wait. Steep time is the lever. Light roast, medium grind: 3:00–4:00. Medium roast, slightly finer: 2:30–3:00.
  4. Place on cup (Clever) or open valve (Switch). Drains in 30–60 seconds.

That's it. No pour pattern, no agitation choreography.

Where Clever and Switch differ

  • Clever has a smaller capacity (~300ml total, room for ~18g of coffee) and is designed only for full-immersion. Cheap, plastic, bombproof.
  • Switch is bigger (V60 02 size, ~500ml), works as both an open V60 and a closed immersion brewer. You can release the valve mid-brew for hybrid pour-over recipes.

The Switch is more flexible. The Clever is simpler. If you only want one and you mostly brew solo, the Clever is hard to beat for the price.

When to skip it

You like the precision of dialing in pour-over. Or you find immersion-clean a bit one-note — the Clever doesn't reach the brightness of a clean V60 brew. It trades some sparkle for forgiveness, and that's the deal.
