The Origami is a Japanese ceramic dripper introduced in 2019 by Trinity Arts and produced in the Mino region of Gifu. Its defining feature is twenty deep vertical flutes that run the full height of the dripper. These flutes keep the filter paper from sealing against the body and allow air to flow freely along the entire length of the brew bed. The Origami is unusual in that it accepts both conical filters (V60-style) and Kalita Wave filters, making it a single device capable of V60-style or Kalita-style brewing depending on filter choice.
How the Origami brews
The flutes act like exaggerated V60 ribs: they maximise the air channel and eliminate the filter-sealing problem that can stall pour-over drawdowns. Because the body is ceramic, thermal mass is high — the Origami holds heat longer than a plastic or metal dripper during a brew. Unlike the V60, the single exit hole sits below the flutes in a design that does not restrict flow, so drawdown speed depends almost entirely on filter choice and grind.
With a conical V60 filter, the Origami behaves like a V60 with even less filter-wall contact. With a Kalita Wave filter, it becomes a flat-bottom brewer with the forgiving geometry Kalita is known for. This versatility is the Origami's main selling point — one dripper covers both dominant pour-over styles.
Sizes in this family
- Origami S — small, 10-18 g dose. Accepts conical 01 filters or Kalita Wave 155.
- Origami M — medium, 15-30 g dose. Accepts conical 02 filters or Kalita Wave 185. The most commonly used size.
- Origami Air — a plastic version of the M that sacrifices thermal mass for weight. Same dimensions and filter compatibility.
A matching ceramic drip holder is sold separately to raise the dripper above a carafe or scale.
What Origami recipes in this collection share
Origami recipes in this collection span both filter styles. With a V60 filter: treat it like a V60 recipe with slightly faster flow. With a Kalita Wave filter: treat it like a Kalita Wave recipe with better thermal retention. Recipes often come from 2019 and later World Brewers Cup competitors, where the Origami has become a common choice. Typical parameter ranges:
- Ratio: 1:14 to 1:17
- Water temperature: 92 to 96 °C
- Grind: medium-fine to medium (filter-dependent)
- Total brew time: 2:30 to 4:00
Choose the Origami when you want a single brewer that can switch between V60 and Kalita profiles, or when you want a visually distinctive ceramic brewer with high thermal mass.
